Have you ever been sitting at work and suddenly get that overwhelming feeling of 'what am I even doing here?' You know the one, when you go in everyday and chip away at an unending pile of work and by the end of it all it feels like you still haven't accomplished anything. So you're left standing there going, "well what's the point?" What is the point? Do you know? Because I don't.
Sure, you get to come away with a paycheck that covers your bills and your basic needs. That's fair. But do you feel accomplished? Do you feel appreciated? Do you feel happy? More and more I dread going to my own 9-5. Not that it's a bad company or that they treat me poorly but because it's not what I want for my life. It's not fulfilling for me. At the end of a hard stressful week I turn around and look back and wonder what was it all for?
Don't get me wrong, I don't want you to go out and quit your job tomorrow. What I'm trying to say is, we get stuck doing the mundane and often times it gets in the way of our own hopes and dreams. But I watch people fall in to a depression because of it. Take my own husband for example, he works his butt off everyday and I watch it slowly steal his happiness. When we met, he was energetic and always had a smile on his face. Now, less so. He's so stressed out after dealing with angry customers all day that by the time he gets home he's irritable and beat down. I see it in myself as well. 40 or 50 hours a week is a lot of time to spend being stressed out.
So what can you do about it? What are your options? Well, for me, I've decided that I don't want to sit in that office cubical forever. But unfortunatly the only way to escape the stress and unhappiness is by scraping the last bit of energy out of an already empty tank. This is how the world keeps you down people. Don't let them. Put that little bit of energy every day in to your craft. Remember that you have something that you love and that makes you happy so go out and do it. Do it until you can say sayonara to that life sucking 9-5 and devote your whole self to your dream. You can do it. I can do it. let's do it together.
Until next time, here's an inspirational quote to get you through:
"Follow your dreams or you'll spend the rest of your life working for someone who did." - Unknown
